Shared note

Boer van Agter-Zuurberg, dist Colesberg, later boer van Strydpoort, distrik Bethulie. In ‘n brief deur Martha Pellisier van Bethulie aan haar kleinseun Arthur Scott toe 'n student op Stellenbosch, skryf sy op 2 Maart 1880: "0ld Frans Viljoen is very ill and is not expected to live. Dr Lautre ('n Franse Sending-dokter wat sendingwerk gedoen het op die sendingstasie van Karmel, ‘n plaas oos van Bethulie in die distrik Smithfield) passed to go to see him. Dr Lautre will say the same." Op 12 Maart skryf sy “The fever has entirely left Bethulie. The dr has very little to do - he only goes out often to see old Frans Viljoen. I do not think the poor old man (toe net 55 jr oud!) will ever get well again." En op 19 Maart skryf sy: "I told you last week of Mr Frans Viljoen's death. Well, on Friday Mr Olivier and many other people, also your uncle Sam and Mr Roux, went to the burial. Willem Joubert, Mrs Viljoen's brother, was also there and after the funeral the people, most of them went into the house to dine (as is the custom of the boers). W. Joubert did not feel well. He had a bad headache, so he went into the bedroom and his wife gave him a bone to pick. He had the knife in his one hand and the bone in the other. He asked her for a little milk and before she could give it to him he was a corpse. Mr Olivier took the knife and bone out of his dead hands. You may fancy the grief of his wife and sister. They took him to Knoppiesfontein and buried him the next day which was Saturday. Almost all the people that were at Mr Viljoen's burial were at W. Joubert's." Op die grafsteen van Frans Viljoen op Strydpoort word aangeteken dat hy op 10 Maart 1880 oorlede is. Die water van die Verwoerddam (later bekend as die Gariepdam) bedek nou die kerkhof. - P J J Viljoen: Tot Anderkant Uit.
